Pain Free is Possible! Minimize

Many things can cause low back injuries--muscle strain or spasm, sprains of ligaments (which attach bone to bone), joint problems, or a "slipped disk." The most common cause is using your back muscles in activities you're not used to, like lifting heavy furniture or doing yard work.

Low back pain is a common concern, affecting up to 90% of Americans at some point in their lifetime. Up to 50% will have more than one episode. Low back pain is not a specific disease. Rather, it is a symptom that may occur from a variety of different processes.

Low back pain is second only to the common cold as a cause of lost days at work. It is also one of the most common reasons to visit a doctor's office or a hospital's emergency unit.

When to Seek Medical Care
Research shows time and time again that early intervention is essential for the treatment of low back pain. A recent research article by Timothy W. Flynn, Ph.D., PT showed a 95% success rate for patients with acute low back pain. One of the main factors in this high success rate was early intervention less than 16 days after the injury. However if you are having chronic low back pain, there is still help for you. An appropriately designed home exercise program can be very beneficial in helping to decrease chronic low back pain. So whether you are having acute or chronic low back pain, the right time to see Back in Motion Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine, Inc. is now.

Herniated discs are produced as the spinal discs degenerate or grow thinner. The jellylike central portion of the disc bulges out of the central cavity and pushes against a nerve root.

Spinal stenosisis a narrowing of the lumbar (back) or cervical (neck) spinal foramen, which causes compression of the nerve roots.

Spinal degeneration is caused by alterations in the disc that progress to degeneration.

Muscle spasm (very tense muscles that remain contracted)

Strain or tears to the muscles or ligaments supporting the back

Lumbar instabilities such as spondylolisthesis

And many more…please call if you have questions regarding your low back pain.
